William Asbury Dysard
William "Bill" Asbury Dysard died at Greenbrier Valley Medical
Center, Ronceverte, Monday, June 27, 2005, one day short of his 96th
birthday.
He was born June 28, 1909, the only son of the late
Asbury Kincaid and Bettie Susan Echard Dysard.
He married Eula Catherine May, daughter of John
Verdin May and Lillie Margaret Moore of Pocahontas County on July 2, 1932.
He is survived by a son, William Asbury, Jr., pastor
of Kitchell Presbyterian Church East Hanover, New Jersey, and daughter,
Barbara May Riel, of Staunton, Virginia; four grandchildren. Opal Moore, of
Hillsboro, is a niece.
Mr. Dysard had served as assistant Greenbrier County
maintenance superintendent for the West Virginia Department of Highways for
49 years. He was a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Dysard was guest of honor at the May reenactment
of the Battle of Lewisburg and was scheduled guest of honor at the Little
Levels Heritage Fair Parade in June but he was hospitalized the day before.
His father, A. K. Dysard, was a Confederate soldier in the 26th Virginia
Infantry Battalion, and Dysard was thought to be the last West Virginia
surviving son of a Civil War soldier.
Funeral services were held June 30 at McCraw Funeral
Home in Lewisburg by the Rev. Dr. Dexter Taylor, with burial in Rosewood
Cemetery.
