A Tribute: Real Son of a Confederate Veteran
Dies at the Age of 95
Mr. William Asbury Dysard died June 27, 2005 one day short
of his 96th birthday. He
was the son of the Confederate veteran Asbury Kincaid Dysard. Mr. Dysard, a lifelong resident of
Lewisburg WV, was retired assistant supervisor of the WV Division of
Highways. He was a familiar sight in
Lewisburg as he mowed his yard maintaining it like a park.
His father served with Company E, 26th VA
Infantry, also known as the White Sulphur Rifles. He enlisted in 1861 and served until the end of the war. He fought at the Battle of Dry Creek
(White Sulphur Springs, WV) and most likely at the Battle of Lewisburg (VA,
now WV) and the Battle of New Market.
He was issued a “parole of honor” on June 12, 1865.
The 2005 Battle of Lewisburg Living History &
Reenactment was held in honor of Mr. Dysard.
His family said he had been thrilled by all the attention and for him
it was one of the greatest moments in his life. He will be missed by the many
people who were fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and speak with
him. His clear mind and sharp wit
made him a man of great character.
His knowledge of local history was outstanding. Our link to our Civil War history has now
been sadly broken.
